Alghero is one of Sardinia’s main towns, situated in the north-west of the island in the province of Sassari. Its coastline is known as the ‘Coral Coast’ because it is famous for its red coral. Alghero is also popular for its magnificent beaches, its rich historical heritage and its architecture.
The town has plenty to see and do. You can visit the old town with its cobbled streets surrounded by ramparts dating back to the 13th century. These walls were built to protect the town, and now offer superb views of the sunset. In the centre of the old town is the Piazza Porta Terra, where you can see the Torre della Porta a Terra, a tower that formed part of the fortifications surrounding the town. For those with a keen interest in architecture, be sure to visit the Palazzo d’Albis, one of the most beautiful palaces in the region. The Cathedral of Santa Maria is also a must-see. There are several museums to visit in Alghero, including the Coral Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Art Museum. The Grotta di Neptuno (Neptune Cave) is a must-see, as this two-million-year-old sea cave is full of fascinating geological treasures.
Sardinia is famous for its beautiful beaches of white sand and turquoise water. You’ll find plenty of coves and small, unspoilt beaches where you can spend a pleasant time swimming and sunbathing. Be sure to visit Plage Bombarde, Plage Lazzaretto and Plage de Maria Pia.
The region is also renowned for its culinary delights. After a day on the beach or sightseeing, sample the local specialities in a traditional restaurant. Dishes not to be missed include tagliatelle with lobster or lobster Catalan style, while Alghero lobster is also a typical island dish. The region is also famous for its wineries, so wine lovers can explore the vineyards and taste the local wines.
